Leviticus 3 – Infectious Skin Diseases

Covers a variety of skin diseases: infections, ulcers, boils, scabs, and general eczema. Leprosy is a mistranslation. Anyone judged infected is sent outside the camp boundaries until healed. Primary emphasis is cultic (religious ceremony and ritual). A diseased person is not qualified to approach God.

Later the prophets use the imae of disease to communicate the seriousness of Israel’s sin. An Israelite, familiar from childhood with the laws of ritual cleanness, would immediately understand the prophet’s message as he describes God’s people this way: “your whole heart is afflicted. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness – only wounds and welts and open sores” (Isa. 1:5,6).

Contaminated Objects as well as persons can be ritually unclean. Here molds and fungus on clothing or buildings are discussed.

Cultic:
1.
A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.
2. A system or community of religious worship and ritual.
3. The formal means of expressing religious reverence; religious ceremony and ritual.
