Led by Cloud & Fire, Day & Night

Light tinged cloud

At the Lord’s command they encamped and at the Lord’s command they set out.  They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses. Numbers 9:23

I always want to do something wonderful and exciting.  I want to keep going, feeling a wonderful sense of direction.

I get impatient when things are not happening.  Whether it is making money or more meaningful things like writing or painting.  Sometimes, I am filled with inspiration and excitement like when looking at a painting I just completed that looks really good.  Most of the times though , things are not happening and I toil away at taking small hesitant steps striking out everywhere trying to hit something solid.

Many people, especially Type A people, must feel the same way I do.  Constantly driving ourselves to march forward. No idle hands.  That’s bad.

But from reading Numbers 7-9, I realize that we should trust God with the pace of our lives.  Through a cloud and fiery pillar, God himself directed the children of Israel.

At the LORD’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp.  When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the LORD’s order and did not set out.  Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the LORD’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out.  Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out.  Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. At the LORD’s command they encamped, and at the LORD’s command they set out. They obeyed the LORD’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.   Numbers 9:18-23.

So let’s not be anxious even when nothing is happening in your life.  Be still and wait for God’s signal.  We’re children of God so we have all the time in the world.

We can also ask for things.  Then, wait for His direction.  That’s the winning formula.  No worries.

Waiting by the road
