Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Acts 16:30
Paul and his team are led by God into Europe. The first European convert is a woman named Lydia. Then, overjoyed, she invites the apostles to her house.
“If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. 15
Then, on their way to a place of prayer, the apostles met a slave girl having a spirit of divination who was bringing her masters much profit by fortunetelling. Paul said to the spirit:
“I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very moment. 18
Her angry owners seized Paul and Silas and took them to the chief magistrates. “These men are throwing our city in an uproar.” And the city magistrates have thems beaten and thrown into prison. When an earthquake opens the prison doors, the jailer thinks that they escaped, and is about to kill himself. Paul stops him, letting him know that they are still there.
[Faith: the only condition of salvation]
The jailer asks:
“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved.” … And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household. 16:30-34
They received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so. Many of them believed, along with a number of prominent Greek women and men. 17:11, 12
While there were many detractors, some people such as Lydia, a fabrics seller, the slave girl, a fortuneteller, and the jailer, noblemen etc. became converts.
While many people already made up their minds to reject the word outright, these people wanted to know.
“May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming?” 17:19
And, when the answer was given, they accepted them. How did they know to ask the question? And, how did they end up believing it while many others rejected?
