Psalm 64:  But, Suddenly, God Shall Shoot At Them With An Arrow

But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they shall be wounded. Psalm 64:7

A Prayer for Protection from Hidden Enemies

David prays for protection from enemies who plot against the godly.  When God brings them to ruin all will fear Him, and the godly will rejoice.

64:5, 6 The arrogance of the wicked in their plots against the righteous is a continuing theme in the Psalms (Ps. 9;10;12).  Who will see:  The wicked do not know, or do not care, that there is One who sees (73:11), and who will repay (75:7).

5  They encourage themselves in an evil matter; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, “Who will see them?” 6  They devise iniquities: “We have perfected a shrewd scheme.” Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.

64:10 The joy of confident trust in God cannot be overstated.  By placing our problems into God’s hands, we can rest in His sovereign will for our lives.  Concerns about the future can be cast aside, for the Lord controls our future and has good plans for us (see Rom. 8:28).  All the upright in heart is another designation for the righteous or “the blameless” (v.4).  Their glory is their exuberant praise to God (63:11).

10  The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

** The enemies do things in secret.  They have much to hide.  Their intent is malicious, targeting our freedom and lives. When we try to fight against them, we often despair.  We can’t see all of what they are doing.  We don’t know the source and details.  In this psalm, David tells us that it will be God Himself who will shoot an arrow, and suddenly, they will be cut down.

So, no need for fear.  We can rest in his sovereign will for our lives.  Concerns about the future can be cast aside, for the Lord controls our future and has good plans for us.

64 1  To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation; Preserve my life from fear of the enemy. 2  Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity, 3  Who sharpen their tongue like a sword, And bend their bows to shoot their arrows–bitter words, 4  That they may shoot in secret at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear. 5  They encourage themselves in an evil matter; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, “Who will see them?” 6  They devise iniquities: “We have perfected a shrewd scheme.” Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.

7  But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they shall be wounded. 8  So He will make them stumble over their own tongue; All who see them shall flee away. 9  All men shall fear, And shall declare the work of God; For they shall wisely consider His doing. 10  The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory.
